【摘要】:Thespecificgravityofwoodgivesanexcellentmeasureoftheamountofwoodsubstancepresentinasample.Thus,itmayserveasavaluableindicatoroftheamountofwoodpulpthatcouldbeproduced,theworkabilityofthematerial,orthestrengthcharacteristicsofaspecimenoraspecies.Itshouldberecognizedthatspecificgravityvariesbetweentrees,withinatree,andbetweenspecies.Sincethespecificgravityofwoodsubstanceispracticallyconstantforallspecies(approximately1.53),itisapparentthatindividualspecificgravityvaluesareindicativeoftheamountofwoodsubstancepresent.Itaffordsarapidandvaluablemethodforselectionofwoodforspecificuses.Itmaybedesirabletoknowthespecificgravityofalivingtree,astructuralmemberalreadyinplace,alogcrosssection,asegmentofaresearchelement,ortheearlywoodorlatewoodlayer.Thespecimenthusmaybelargeorsmall,regularorirregular,andatavarietyofmoisturecontents.Thesetestmethodsgiveproceduresthatincludeallofthesevariablesandprovidesforcalculationofspecificgravityvaluestodegreesofaccuracygenerallyneeded.1.1Thesetestmethodscoverthedeterminationofthespecificgravityofwoodandwood-basedmaterialstogenerallydesireddegreesofaccuracyandforspecimensofdifferentsizes,shapes,andmoisturecontentconditions.Themethodtitleisindicativeoftheproceduresusedorthespecificareaofuse.Thisstandarddoesnotpurporttoaddressallofthesafetyconcerns,ifany,associatedwithitsuse.Itistheresponsibilityoftheuserofthisstandardtoestablishappropriatesafetyandhealthpracticesanddeterminetheapplicabilityofregulatorylimitationspriortouse.
